Following the launch of international schemes in the USA and France, OYBike and partner Veolia Transport are looking forward to bringing the technology closer to home. This month, bike hire rental stations will begin to be positioned around the city centre offering local workers and tourists an alternative way to get around.

Working in partnership with Cardiff City Council, OYBike will be offering the latest in bike rental system technology. Users of the system will be able to hire bikes via their mobile phones, without being charged for the call. The bikes are city style with a drive shaft which means no messy chain. The low infrastructure rental station is designed to take up the minimum of street space while being accessible to all users.

Remarking on the new contract, OYBike Managing Director Bernie Hanning said, “We are delighted to partner with Cardiff City Council on this flagship scheme and look forward to welcoming new users to the joys of convenience cycling. OYBike is always looking to develop our technology following customer feedback and this latest design offers the ability for the software to interact with existing transport smart card schemes to provide a fully integrated system. It is my hope this system will be come an iconic part of Cardiff city centre’s offering”.

Councillor Delme Bowen, Cardiff City Council Executive member for Traffic and Transportation said, “Cycling is a brilliant way to get around Cardiff and a great way to keep fit and healthy. We have a number of good routes in the city and I am confident that this scheme will prove to be very popular”.

The system will be officially launched at the Walking and Cycling Conference in Cardiff on 22nd September. The system will comprise 70 bikes in 10 locations.
